And this is the second time this honest man would save corporate bodies large sums of money. For saving the company this whopping sum of money, the management during the company's annual general meeting held at Lagos Sheraton hotel presented him a cheque and told the bewildered audience that Udoh saved the company what could have led to its greatest embarrassment.
Recalling how the incident happened, he reviewed that Udoh after the close of business of the Idumota, Lagos branch of the company, decided to do his usual routine check. He checked windows, doors, drawers and electronic equipment before handling over to the night guard. It was during this routine check that he discovered that one of the company's safe and the outside door leading to the safe was unlocked by the cashier. Corroborating and continuing the story, the honest man said, when I touched the third safe around 6.00pm, it swung open! There were two sacks of money. I was shocked and speechless at first. I was afraid that if I step in, the alarm would be ignited and I might be taken for a thief. “But I summoned courage and went inside. I saw bundles of naira in different denominations, Heaps of it. I wanted to raise an alarm to attract my colleagues on duty, (William Akpan) but I stopped. That was his first day of working there and he w! as new at Hogan Guards Limited I didn't tell him. I just instructed him to wait and watch. “I dashed to the Broad Street branch and confided in one Alhaji manager there who quickly called the Victoria Island head office where a van was dispatched to convey the money to head office. The money was removed around 8.00pm.”
“I thought that was the end of the story. But on Saturday when I reported for work and was doing my routine check, I discovered another sack of money. I quickly took it, deposited the sack in the manager's office. There were about 21 bundles in N5, 000.00 bunches. I believe the 21 bundles were left over taken to the head office the previous day, because the money was in the manager's office, I was at work on Sunday, I didn't want to be far from office.”
On Monday, the money was handed over to the manager and after counting; we discovered that the money was about N2 million Naira. Nobody knows what could have happened if I had not reported the laxity.
“I was commended by the manager for my honesty. Later, I received a commendation from the bank.”
Udoh revealed that this was his second time he saved corporate bodies huge sums of money. In 1979, I saved my white boss more than N1 million when he left his office open; I transferred the money to a safe room.
“Honesty is in me; I can't steal, even though I'm poor, I have a wife, two kids and I live with my brother in Ajegunle. I have to prove that there are still honest people who want to redeem our country's image.”
